Beauty News: Jacqe Gutierrez, Beauty Mogul, Shares What It's Like To Work With Anne Curtis

1.  What segment of the market is BLK targeting? What opportunity did you see in that particular market? 
BLK caters to the practical, everyday woman who’s on the lookout for a fuss-free makeup line to help her do more and be more—by making her life easier. We want to help women simplify their makeup routines by giving them no-frills, high-quality cosmetics that promise an enjoyable, long-wearing experience, as well as value for money. I feel that there is a scarcity of high-quality brands in that price segment so there is clearly an opportunity to introduce a brand like BLK. We’re out to prove that luxe-looking, premium makeup doesn’t have to be a splurge. Our lipsticks, for example, are up to par with higher-end brands in terms of quality, but at a fraction of the cost.

2. Where will the products be sold and why did you choose these platforms? Have they been proven effective from your experience? 
BLK will be exclusively sold in top Watsons stores nationwide and through our own online store (www.blkcosmetics.com.ph). Watsons is the No.1 beauty store in the Philippines so it is the best way for us to reach as many consumers as we can. They’re also very aggressive in marketing their retail stores so it’s beneficial for a brand like BLK to partner with them. I’ve been working with Watsons for over a decade now—ever since my corporate days—and their priority is to ensure that they that they continually cater to the expanding beauty needs of women today. Since we’re also in the digital age, we’ve decided to have our own website to make it easier for anyone to purchase a BLK product anytime, anywhere! We’re also in talks with other online stores so hopefully other partnerships will play out soon. We want to reach as many women as possible, so they can all try and enjoy BLK products.
3.What was the process you and Anne went through to build this brand and actualize your vision?
Anne is super hands-on and passionate when it comes to BLK. In spite of her busy schedule, she finds time to really test and review all the products and shades, research new product ideas and creative pegs, and even shoot for all of the videos that we’ve created for the brand. She’s always messaging me her ideas—even during the wee hours of the morning—especially when she comes across an interesting innovation or beauty trend that she wants to explore. I am simply amazed at how she manages to do everything, including work on BLK, with the same level of professionalism that she has for all her other many endeavors: her showbiz career, her other businesses, and even her charity works. She’s a superwoman!  The concept of uncomplicated beauty in a makeup brand is something that I’ve always wanted to explore because I feel that the cosmetics industry is currently built on unrealistic expectations, with super made-up models and too-complicated routines. Coincidentally, Anne feels the same way. So when I proposed this concept to her, she was 100% on board! It’s exactly her beauty philosophy as well—that less is more, and that beauty should be made easy. It’s been smooth-sailing since the beginning since we really share the same vision for the brand and we both just want to give quality products to all her fans.

Beauty News: Anne Curtis Shares Her BLK Cosmetics Journey



1.     What’s the philosophy behind BLK cosmetics and what was her inspiration behind it? The brand is called blk, which is short for black. Why we chose black is because it really represents for being timeless, uncomplicated. So that was really the inspiration behind it, that everyone can have an uncomplicated beauty regimen with the right products. We really wanted to come up with the idea to create quality products that make it uncomplicated to piece yourself together.   

2.     Describe the BLK girl
The blk girl is someone on the go, who is not afraid to experiment, and is a go-getter. She keeps it real, keeps it simple, and keeps it uncomplicated.

3.     Aside from Anne Curtis, who would a peg blk girl be?
Natalie Portman and Angelina Jolie. They always keep it simple and classy, but at the same time, they’re not afraid to add a dose of color, they’re not afraid to experiment.

4.     What is your signature look and which BLK products do you use to achieve that?
“My signature trademark lipstick color is red. I feel like it has become my lucky color. So whenever I use red lipstick, it’s a top choice between matte lipstick or a liquid lipstick. On regular days, It really depends on my mood, like a chameleon. I like to blend in with what the weather is, or how my day is going. I love trying many different looks, but I have that one trademark that I always go back to.”

Beauty News: Anne Curtis launches her own makeup line, and it’s all about Uncomplicated Beauty


Celebrated actress, TV host, recording artist, endorser, author, pursuer of dreams, and all-around media darling: Anne Curtis sure has a lot of feathers in her cap, and she recently added another one as she finally launched her very own makeup line, blk cosmetics.

As a beauty icon herself—and a self-confessed makeup lover—it is only fitting that Anne’s most recent venture is one that indulges her kikay side. “Makeup is something I’m very passionate about,” she says. “It’s part of who I am.” To bring this passion project to life, she partnered with businesswoman and beauty maven Jacqe Yuengtian Gutierrez to create a one-of-a kind makeup line that is all about uncomplicated beauty.

Why blk cometics? “It stands for the color black—something timeless, elegant, and uncomplicated, which is what we want the brand wants to be,” explains Anne. But unlike many other cosmetic products available in the market today, blk aims to stand out by going back to basics. Explains Jacqe, “We’re not trying to sell numerous complicated products to women. Our goal is to keep things simple.” She adds, “Plus, I’m also proud of the fact that we are one of the few local brands that has an official cruelty-free certification from PETA.”


Uncomplicated Beauty

The ultimate busybody, Anne knows how important it is to have a beauty routine that works and, more importantly, one that won’t take much time. “I’m someone who likes to keep things simple, clean, yet still have an impact,” she says. “And so [the idea that we came up with was to deliver] quality products that make it ‘uncomplicated’ to piece yourself together.”

This meant paring down all the possible makeup options to come up with a carefully curated line that carries onlly the absolute essentials—but versatile ones at that. The beauty aisles, after all, are already filled to the brim with a million intimidating choices. Anne didn’t want to add to the clutter.

Instead, blk cosmetics is out to give women what they really need—meaning, products that they’ll really use—while also leaving room for play. The items in the blk makeup line, particularly the lipsticks, come in a wide range of gorgeous, wearable shades that make it easy for you to change up your look from day to day. “I call myself a chameleon,” Anne says, explaining the need for versatility. “I like to create endless looks depending on my mood: a fresh look today, a bold red lip tomorrow.”

The best part? Le Petit Soufflé Introduces All Day Breakfast (September 6, 2017)

Le Petit Soufflé is already a magical name in itself. All day breakfast at Le Petit Soufflé probably sounds more magical, and indeed, it really is more magical! 

Le Petit Soufflé recently launched their all day breakfast in the form of their spinoff Eggs Benedict dishes. Le Petit Soufflé is famous for its French-Japanese fusion fare, but to me, it is the place I most closely associate with perfectly poached eggs. Jiggly eggs with fully runny yolks? Only Le Petit Soufflé can do that. They know their eggs very well. I come to this place to jiggle all the egg dishes, and sing Jigglypuff's theme song while doing so.

Neutrogena Fine Fairness Light Mask Is Here!!! + Review

"Hey! It's that thingy they used on AsNTM!"

That was my first thought upon opening a giaaant box and discovering that there was a Neutrogena Fine Fairness Mask inside. If you were also watching AsNTM season 5, you may recall this alien mask like thingy that the girls were treated to, somewhere nearing the finale. I watched each episode as it aired so I can't really remember which episode hahahaha. 

And finally, it's safe to say that the Fine Fairness range in the Philippines is complete! In the collection, you can now find cleanser, toner, serum, gel cream, overnight cream, and of course, the light mask. The light mask is meant to help make skin more firm and radiant, through infrared light and red light. Yes, apparently, it's possible! I will explain further down the post! 

Fow now, I want to show how interesting the seeding kit was! 

All the items came in this huge box. In the age of packages being sent through courier, it is very very rare to still see a package this size. I think this was like 1ft X 1ft X 2ft!

Sooper Beaute New So Matte Lip and Cheek Therapy Swatches

The liquid lipstick of our dreams is now back with more shades! To those who saw it, I did a review of the old edition of Sooper Beaute's So Matte Lip and Cheek Therapy last year. The older edition has a different formulation, as it was creamier, thicker, and had a distinct grapeseed oil smell. This formulation is less of a lip cream and more of a liquid lipstick, and this smells strongly of watermelon. 

I'm not going to do a review on these yet as I still have some clarifications with the brand team. I don't want to speak until I have more information. However, for now, I would like to share how lovely the shades are!!! Hence this swatch post. 

Sooper Beaute reaaaaally outdid itself this time with the shades, churning out 9 Sooper beaute-ful (see what I did there?) shades perfect for Pinay skintones. If there's any brand that gets what kind of shades go well on Pinay skintones, it just has to be Sooper Beaute. Across all their products and their product lines, the Filipina skintone is always the priority, and it shows. So here we go!

Say Hello To Cream Silk Customized Solutions

It's been a loooong time coming, but it's finally here now!!! 

Okaaay, here I am again getting senti over when I was an intern for Cream Silk. Even waaay back then, it was already the dream to have the endorsers on the tubes. Unlike plenty of the top competitors of Cream Silk which are foreign franchises, Cream Silk is a purely Filipino brand. It was created here for Filipina hair. For a brand whose equity almost always equates to the word Filipina, it really is just about time to showcase the best of Filipina beauty on the tubes themselves. 

Of course, given the high number of commercials played everyday and all the fandoms going wild, I'm sure y'all know about this already by now. However, I would like to slow things down, because as far back as I can remember, this is the first time we're seeing Filipinas on conditioner tubes. Since a lot of other brands do not have people on the tubes, they're automatically out. For the brands that do have faces on the tube, usually, it's a computer generated graphic, or a stock model. It has never gone to a point, if I may say, that a conditioner brand has gone on to put very recognizably Filipina faces on a tube. Given that almost all the fast moving consumer goods in the market are imported, or the concepts for packaging and formulation are imported, you can then imagine how significant this is of a move. What this just tells me is that Filipinas are worthy enough for big companies to spend money on to put onto the tubes. The Filipina is world class enough, beautiful enough, and important enough for this. Packaging changes are reaaaally reaaaally expensive, which is why this is how I am viewing things. 

But wait, it's not only the packaging that changed! Cream Silk has been around for 33+ years, so it just means that they know Filipina hair so well. As such, they used that expertise to create an even more powerful formulation. Hence the #PowerToTransform campaign. Cream Silk made all their variants even more powerful than ever, so that consumers now have the power to transform their hair the way they envision it.
