I know our primary concern in the world right now is to fight COVID-19. How I wish we could ask for a world where climate change would pause while we’re dealing with covid to give us a break and all. But unfortunately, life doesn’t work that way, and climate change is continuously occurring. Even if we’re in the middle of a global pandemic, now is not the time to procrastinate over climate change, so Garnier has been proactively making its operations greener and the brand has been making strides, or One Green Steps, towards bettering the environment and our future.
Garnier’s green steps so far include solidarity sourcing in 787 communities by 2020, 97% products with an improved social and/or environmental profile by 2021, 53% recycled water in plants by 2025 (thanks to water loop system), and they endeavor to even improve these stats in the coming years.
Garnier held an e-vent and I was one of the attendees. Garnier Marketing Director Isabel Falco and Cora’s Communications Head Cat Triviรฑo were present to share their insights about Garnier’s green steps towards sustainability.
The major piece of good news presented during the event was that Garnier has partnered up with Cora for a mangrove project! For every purchase of Garnier’s Vitamin C All-Star Kit (Php1499), one mangrove seedling will be donated to Cora’s mangrove plantation project in Leyte. Mangroves help immensely with climate change as these collect 5 times more carbon than the usual trees and forests. Plus, these also help with flood control and the prevention of storm surges. If I may also add, the mangrove plantations also help to provide employment for the #WoMangroveWarriors from communities near the mangrove plantation, so it’s also got a social impact aside from an environmental one.
Indeed, it’s a win-win situation to be enjoying all our Garnier faves and helping the environment with a small green step!
Another piece of good news is that starting this month, Garnier has partnered with Lazada to be able to fulfill their orders in eco-friendly packaging through their Green Parcel Initiative. From the usual bubble wrap, plastic pouch, and meters of plastic tape, Garnier orders from hereon will now be packed in boxes, cushioned by recycled paper padding, and sealed with kraft paper tape. I do not antagonize the brands that use heaps of bubble wrap as packages really do get manhandled during shipping, but indeed, it’s amazing that a brand can embrace a more eco-friendly way of doing e-commerce. I hope that Garnier will not be the last brand to partner with large e-commerce platforms for special collaborations on order fulfillment.
Regarding Garnier’s eco-friendly packaging, Lazada COO Carlos Barrera guested during the e-vent. He shared: โWe are excited that Garnier has rolled out the Green Parcel initiative on our platform. We fully support their initiative to be one of the brands championing biodegradable plastic-free packaging on the platform.โ
Indeed, it might be a hopeless time at the moment, but nothing can stop us from making our own green steps towards a sustainable future! Garnier is available at Lazada and at all leading department stores and drugstores nationwide.
